Nonna hunched, a mountain in a flowered house dress,
Slapping dough, muttering prayers under her breath, garlic perfume
Clinging to the air like incense. Uncle Nino grumbles news,
Spits olive pits in the chipped enamel colander,
Face creased with the map of a life spent squinting at sun
Across endless rows of gnarled olive trees...
